Pictures of the Year
In our continued mission to expand the scope of Unbound and widen our team of collaborators, we’re very proud to announce that this year, with the generous support of University of Missouri Libraries, we’re partnering with Pictures of the Year to present some of the very finest photojournalists presently working anywhere in the world.
The event takes place at Big Ragtag from 11:45 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 23.
Pictures of the Year International is the oldest and most prestigious photojournalism competition in the world. It began at the Missouri School of Journalism nearly 80 years ago. Each year expert photographers and editors meet in Columbia to select the best pictures and stories from more than 1,000 photographers working in more than 100 countries.
Partnering with POY, Unbound is proud to present three women visual storytellers. Moderated by photojournalism professor Jackie Bell, we are hosting a session with the director of photographer for CNN Digital, Bernadette Tuazon, Gabrielle Lurie of the San Francisco Chronicle, who has been named Photographer of the Year, Local for two consecutive years and Yehyun Kim, who was named College Photographer of the Year.
Our panelists will discuss the evolution of visual storytelling as seen through their eyes and experience. Their empathetic stories of struggle and triumph include poverty, drug abuse, as well as senior citizen cheerleaders. They show how photojournalism is changing, whether it’s in a small town, big city or the global audience of an entire broadcast network. Additionally, we invite people to visit Orr Street Studios (106 Orr St.), where we are exhibiting award-winning photographs from the Pictures of the Year competitions.
